The Boss RV-2 Digital Reverb put multiple reverb modes into the compact Boss format at a time when digital reverb still felt expensive and specialized. Room, hall, plate, and gate-style sounds give it a distinctly late-80s character: useful, sometimes grainy, and not as smooth as later RV pedals. It is historically important because it made stompbox reverb feel realistic for normal pedalboards.
